Betty (Roena) Jones Burroughs was born on February 13,1930 in St.Augustine,Fl to the late
Maude Lewis Jones of Rison,Arkansas and Harold R.Jones of Jacksonville,Fl
She was called home on Friday,November 1st at 7:45 pm with her daughter Deidre by her
bedside.
Betty(Roena) Jones Burroughs grew up in Riviera Beach,Fl . She attended Riviera Beach
Elementary and Industrial High School in West Palm Beach, Fl. (Class of 1948)
After graduating high school,Betty attended Florida A & M University,received her Bachelor of
Science degree in Education on June 2, 1952.
On April 9,1951 cupid found his way into her heart, when she married the late William
Burroughs Jr. From this union she was blessed with two daughters, the late Deniese Burroughs
and Deidre Burroughs.
Betty (Roena) Jones Burroughs began her teaching career with the Dade County Public School
System at Dunbar Elementary and West Dunbar Elementary from 1952 to 1992, where she
taught forty years. Betty retired from Miami Dade County Public School system on 6/19/1992.She was elected
Teacher Of The Year at Dunbar Elementary in 1982 . Her co-worker and friend, the late Clara Underwood said Betty is one of society’s
honest,polite,refined,conservative,intelligent,preserved,cooperative and dedicated woman and
mother.Possessing the ability to understand herself,recognizing her goals and ambitions,all her
energy to accomplish them. A personality that glows with kindness,helpfullness,concern and
consideration for others,very organized,a happy and well rounded individual. Her first love is to
be left alone to work with her little boys and girls. Dedication is her middle name”
She was preceded in death by her mother Maude Lewis Jones, father Harold Jones,brother
Richard Jones and Harold Jones,daughter Deniese Burroughs, and husband William Burroughs
Jr.
Remembering Betty with cherished memories are her daughter Deidre Burroughs,friend Tony
Wells,Goddaughter Kaysheila Underwood,former co-workers,Melvina Hammett,Mary
Ann(Mackie) Moore,former students Shawnee Hammett,Rodnee Wimberly, Mr.Franklin Higgs
Jr.,late daughter Deniese college classmates Jemmie & Warner Jones,Ms.Irma
Harris,Mr.&Mrs.Zaid & Ruqquyyah Rahman,Mr&Mrs.Armando&Winnie Colbourne,Corey
Mitchell and a host of family & friends.
Betty touched the lives of many students as well as her friends and co-workers, through her
generous nature, warm friendly personality and smart wit.
Her late daughter Deniese said: Mom,may God continue to bless you and keep you in perfect
peace.For all that you have been through you are truly a blessing to us all. Remember never
